We have Moved!!

Inline orthodontics is pleased to announce we have moved from 17 Park Place, Stevenage SG1 1DU to our new premises based at 5 Letchmore Road, Stevenage, SG1 3JH. We are based in a temporary unit on site while the building works complete. It is a very exciting time as we are going to be based in a detached building which has ease of access for all and parking. There is also free parking on the side streets. We are a 10-15 minute walk from the station and there is a bus stop almost outside of the surgery. It is a 5 minute walk to the old town high street. There will be 4 fully equipped surgeries and a new cone bean computed tomography x-ray which takes a 3D image of the teeth. We look forward to welcoming and seeing you there.

Welcoming World Renowned Orthodontist To The Practice

Inline orthodontics has another new orthodontist who not only treats children and adults with conventional braces but is also an expert in lingual braces, the brace that is hidden on the inside of the teeth. Vittorio Cacciafesta is a world renowned lingual orthodontist who lectures internationally. We at Inline are very lucky to have him on our team.

‘AGAINST THE ODDS’ COMPETITION 2013 – ‘DANIEL’S SMILE IS THE REAL PRIZE!’

The British Orthodontic Society reported: Stevenage-based orthodontist, Dr Jonathan Alexander-Abt and his team are celebrating after being recognised by the national British Orthodontic Society’s ‘Against the Odds’ competition for his work in transforming the smile of one of his patients.

Nominations are made by orthodontic patients whose treatment has had a profoundly positive impact on their confidence and general quality of life. Jonathan’s patient Daniel Smith, 15, suffers from Autism and ADHD and, prior to treatment, had always had trouble with eating and cleaning his teeth. He nominated Jonathan and his team at Inline Orthodontics to thank them for their unwavering support and encouragement throughout his two-year treatment.

Explaining his treatment, Daniel’s mother Sarah said: “Daniel is Autistic and it can be difficult to introduce anything new to him, especially something like braces – but it was made easier by the patience and understanding of the staff.”

“When Daniel’s braces were fitted everyone at the practice provided reassurance and gave him a lot of encouragement to continue with his treatment. He now smiles much more confidently and is like a different person. It is great to see.”

Jonathan added: “To be able to really make a difference to someone’s quality of life is one of the great privileges of our profession. My philosophy has always been that we are treating people, not teeth, and my team and I always strive to understand the needs of our patients. I am very grateful to Daniel for taking the time to enter the awards and share his experiences.”

Daniel received a brand new Oral B Electric Toothbrush, to help keep his new smile as healthy as possible. Dr Alexander-Abt was recognised at the British Orthodontic Society’s annual conference which took place in Manchester in September.

The Stevenage Advertiser hailed ‘Daniel’s smile as the real prize for award-winning orthodontist’. (25 September 2013)

Band together with Inline Orthodontics to Beat Bullying!

Inline Orthodontics, the only Specialist Orthodontics Practice in Stevenage, is conducting an anti-bullying campaign during UK Anti Bullying Week 2012 which runs from 19th – 23rd November and Jonathan was interviewed about it by JackFM Radio.

To mark the start of the campaign, a meeting is being held at our practice to discuss ways in which professionals in our Hertfordshire area can help young people who are being bullied.  Stevenage MP Stephen McPartland will be spearheading the start of the campaign followed by a moderated discussion with BeatBullying’s Director of Social Action and key members of the local community including head teachers, councillors, sports club leaders, family dentists and concerned parents who have been invited to participate.  We will hear from twelve year old Sarah from Stevenage who has been bullied because of the appearance of her teeth and received a Citizenship Certificate from her school for helping a fellow student with his brace. Happily, Sarah just finished her orthodontic treatment with fixed braces and is now smiling from ear to ear!

OUR INSPIRATION

Inline Orthodontics was inspired to participate in Anti-Bullying Week after UK research, published in the Journal of Orthodontics in December 2011, demonstrated a clear link between being bullied and malocclusion or ‘sticking out teeth’ and found that nearly 13{c9e965edeefe98bdfaa5b8657e0326bf7e146db5f8bf1e6d7e910369b54ae816} of adolescents aged between 10-14 years old examined for orthodontic treatment had been bullied. Participants reported a negative impact on both their self-esteem and quality of life. Our practice’s experience is that many young people seek orthodontic treatment to improve their confidence or after having been bullied at school about their dental appearance.  We intend to produce an action plan based on the findings of the meeting.

CALL TO ACTION

Jonathan Alexander-Abt, Principal Orthodontist at Inline Orthodontics commented “Bullying for whatever reason is deplorable and should never be tolerated. This research shows that a significant number of children are being bullied because of the position and appearance of their teeth. As a Specialist Orthodontist I feel that it is important to raise awareness of this and reassure young people that there is something we can do to help them.  If parents have concerns about their child’s dental appearance, in the first instance they should speak with their family dentist to see what can be done to help. Every child in the UK is entitled to a free assessment to see if they are suitable for orthodontic treatment on the NHS.”

Inline Orthodontics will be giving out a

BeatBullying’s 2012 ‘Making Bullying Unacceptable!’ wristband

to every patient who visits the practice in November!

Do What You Say and Say What You Do!

Our practice was the first orthodontics practice in the UK to achieve the ISO 9001 quality standard.  Jonathan shared the story of our journey with colleagues in the British Orthodontic Society Business Supplement in an article encapsulating the ethos of the ISO standard:  ‘Do What You Say and Say What You Do!’
